Tis the season to celebrate with TubaChristmas

The Villages TubaChristmas returns for its 15th year this Saturday, Dec. 17.

And this year may echo the sound of over 70 members of the tuba family  — the highest turnout yet — said John Bird, the event coordinator. While participation from area residents plays an important part, efforts to incorporate musicians from local area middle and high schools has helped increase the number as well. Band of Villages helps cover the costs associated with participation for students.

Attendees can expect sing-a-long renditions of holiday favorites such as “Jingle Bells” and “Away In A Manger” with all music conducted by John Strangers, the new conductor of the New Horizons Band.

The first TubaChristmas was held at the Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1974 to celebrate William Bell, a renowned tuba instructor from the early 20th century. Since then, the event has spread to over 200 cities across the country.

“It’s the reason for the season,” Bird said. “And it’s a good way to bring it in with Christmas carols that we all know.”

The event will take place at the  New Life Christian Church, 4701 E CR 462 (Powell Rd. ext.- .7 miles E. of Hwy 301) in Wildwood. Doors will begin opening at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. show. Admission to the event is free.
