Lake Sumter Line Scenic Cruises will be closed Wednesday, May 17, to allow for hydrilla treatment of Lake Sumter.
This schedule may be adjusted based on unexpected circumstances, such as weather.
Hydrilla is an invasive species that can cause extensive damage to natural habitats if left untreated. It is believed hydrilla was first introduced to Florida waters sometime in the 1950s, and by the 1970s could be found throughout the state. As a highly adaptable plant, hydrilla can thrive in almost any freshwater system, according to University of Florida’s Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants. When left untreated, hydrilla can slow water flow and clog irrigation, ultimately impacting water recreational activities and eventually altering the water’s chemistry.
Every year, millions of dollars are spent throughout Florida for maintenance control of hydrilla.
