Before the recent performance at the Savannah Center, patrons were greeted by a crackling camp fire scene exhibited on the stage.
Jim Curry and his band maintained a friendly atmosphere during their show, “A Tribute to the Music of John Denver.”
With accurate versions of Denver favorites, Curry and the band shone. Curry took up his guitar and began playing a rendition of “Rocky Mountain High.”
Anne Curry, who played mandolin, guitar and harmony vocals, claimed the ensemble had last performed in The Villages in 2019.
“Every time we come back to a place and do another show, we do a different set of songs because John Denver has a catalogue that has almost 300 songs that he wrote, performed or recorded,” Anne said. “So we try to change up the show a little bit, but we will do some of the hit songs, too, so you’ll be able to sing along.”
They asked the crowd to join in with songs like “Leaving, On a Jet Plane,” and “Annie’s Song.”
Jim’s sonic resemblance to Denver was unlikely to surprise any die-hard Denver fans in the crowd.
“We like John Denver and (Jim) does an excellent performance. You can close your eyes and almost think it was John Denver performing,” said Doug St. Andrews, of the Village of Duval. “He sticks right to all the songs everyone likes and doesn’t stray too far from it.”
Jim and Anne, who are married, regaled the crowd with heartwarming stories about their time together. They also presented stories about Denver and the origins of some of the tunes.
Their version of “Matthew” contained some unique footage – representing farm life – that Denver created for his own live shows to go along with the song.
Other stunning natural photos shown throughout the event added to the cheerful tone.
“I’ve always liked (John Denver’s) songs,” said Del Webb Spruce Creek resident Barbara Backhus, adding she also likes his voice. “I really find it relaxing.”
