Fire season has begun in Florida. According to Florida Forest Service meteorologist Bryan Williams, fire season runs from March to May or early June. To prepare for the season, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
- Install and check fire alarms regularly.
- Plan a fire escape route.
- Keep heating, electrical and cooking equipment in check.
- Make sure cigarettes, cigars, etc. are properly disposed.
- If you plan on lighting a fire (indoor or outdoor), keep an eye on the flames.
- Have a fire extinguisher.
- Always remember to stop, drop and roll.
If anyone discovers a forest fire, warn others nearby that might be in danger, move to a safe location, alert rescue services by calling 112 and extinguish the fire if possible.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services keeps a daily fire danger map. The map is updated regularly and can be found at www.fdacs.gov.
