Sumter County Sheriff’s Office warns public of phone scam

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant due to a phone scam.

The scam involves calls from someone — sometimes automated — claiming to be a deputy from the sheriff’s office. The scammer informs victims they have warrant for their arrest due to missed jury duty or missed court dates. Calls have come from various phone numbers, which appear to be internet based and likely used as a “spoof” to disguise the original phone number.

The sheriff’s department reminds the public that law enforcement agencies do not call about these matters. If you receive such a call, know it is a scam, and do not send money or provide any personal information.

If you have questions regarding the authenticity of any law enforcement contact, call the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 352-793-2621.
