Sumter County Fire & EMS received recognition from Orlando Health South Lake Hospital following life-saving decisions made by crew during a recent call.
Crews responded to reports of a 77-year-old woman who complained of weakness whenever she attempted to stand or move about. While enroute to the hospital, the crew became aware of sudden onset symptoms displayed by the woman similar to those of a stroke.
Due to their proper assessment and thorough report given to staff at the hospital, the woman received proper treatment and avoided any worsening of conditions, according to a report from the Orlando Heath Fire/EMS Board.
“Your agency’s narratives on your PCRs (patient care report) are by far the most detailed and thorough out of all the agencies we serve,” Andrew Johnson, EMT-P, emergency medical services liaison, wrote to the department.
The woman was later discharged from the hospital with no focal deficits present.
“In emergency services, anytime we take care of a patient we hope for the best outcome for them,” said Damon Allen, Deputy Chief of Operations, Sumter County Fire & EMS. “The three skills first responders need to have to affect a positive outcome for a patient, is to be educated, skilled and capable to provide a very high level of care. The firefighters recognized for this great outcome have those outstanding skills.”
